Responsible
Lobbying Policy
Responsible regulatory guidance plays a key role in addressing social and environmental problems associated with how companies conduct business. We include policy advocacy as part of our business strategy at Mightybytes. This page documents our approach to responsible lobbying and advocacy.
Lobbying Policy Statement
First, we base Mightybytes’ policy advocacy efforts on information vetted from reliable and publicly available sources that are science- and fact-based.
Four primary drivers inform our lobbying strategy at Mightybytes:
- Our organizational mission to make the web more accessible, sustainable, and a better place for everyone,
- The Public Benefit Corporation legal requirement to publicly claim and contribute to a positive impact on society and the environment,
- Requirements outlined by B Corp certification standards as described on this page and elsewhere in our B Corp Impact Hub,
- Our identity as a gay-owned company and LGBT-certified Business Enterprise from the National LBGTQ+ & Allied Chamber of Commerce.
Board Membership
Similarly, some Mightybytes team members sit on executive boards or advisory committees at nonprofit organizations. Occasionally, Mightybytes will partner with these organizations to lend our voice to campaigns they work on.
This could include sitting on panels, meeting with legislators, signing and sharing petitions, and so on.
Financial & In-Kind Contributions
Mightybytes does not make financial political contributions due to our small size and limited resources. Donations and in-kind contributions are limited to internal product development and philanthropic initiatives, typically in support of one or more of our impact business models.
Anti-Corruption & Bribery
Our approach to anti-corruption and bribery includes the following points:
- We call out corruption when we see it and take requisite action as needed.
- We will never offer or take bribes on our own behalf or as a representative of another organization or legislator.
- In tandem with our Supplier Code of Conduct, we partner with values-aligned organizations that have made the same or similar commitments.
- We will always abide by our company Code of Ethics, which includes statements on trust, transparency, and accountability.
Lobbying Partners
Mightybytes has no official lobbying partners. However, we do work with advocacy groups and nonprofit intermediaries to advance legislation, standards, and other regulatory guidance.
These include but are not limited to:
- The Alliance for the Great Lakes
- B Lab and its partner organizations
- Climate Ride
- World Wide Web Consortium
While our work with the World Wide Web Consortium on the Web Sustainability Guidelines does not directly include advocacy, informing laws and policies for more sustainable and responsible tech regulations is a natural extension of these initiatives.
Governance & Risk Management
Mightybytes employs the following governance, control, and risk management practices as part of this policy.
Governance
Advocacy efforts at Mightybytes are overseen by the President. However, with a small team, we are able to request and receive feedback quickly from our entire team to support this work. This enables us to enforce the policy with broader perspectives.
Operational Practices
Here’s how Mightybytes’ Responsible Lobbying Policy is embedded within our operations:
- Our policy is posted in a publicly accessible location on the company website for anyone to read (this page).
- We review opportunities to engage in advocacy on a case-by-case basis based on input from our team, requests from partners, and so on. We document and track these efforts via the Government Affairs & Collective Action page on this website.
- Specific lobbying activities include:
- Signing and sharing petitions for causes we believe in
- Reviewing or providing feedback on proposed regulatory guidance that affects our operations, our mission, or the B Corp movement overall
- Meeting individual lawmakers to advocate for a general or specific piece of legislation
- Presenting the case for a piece of legislation to lawmaking bodies
- If necessary, participating in peaceful public protest
- External stakeholders may provide input or express concerns via the process described below.
Compliance & Risk Management
Unfortunately, responsible tech legislation moves much slower than emerging technologies are released and used. Still, related laws that affect how Mightybytes operates as a design, technology, and marketing consultancy are constantly changing. Examples include:
- Data privacy
- Accessibility
- Security
- Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies
- Climate reporting and disclosures
- Ecodesign and greenwashing rules
- Human capital management regulations
- Any legislation that impacts how we govern and manage our company
Mightybytes regularly reviews legislation and conducts ongoing research into laws or policies that could impact how we conduct business. This research informs customer service and communications strategies as well as training and capacity building efforts on behalf of our team, customers, and other stakeholders as part of our Impact Business Models.
Here’s how the company identifies, manages, and monitors risks of non-compliance:
- Potential risk issues are evaluated at weekly team meetings informed by ongoing conversations with clients and the points above.
- We share relevant announcements as they are released via internal communications channels and discuss potential avenues to address the emerging issues.
- Our team reviews new or updated regulatory guidance to interpret how changing legislation might impact our operations on at least a quarterly basis at in-person team meetings.
- Policies and procedures are implemented to maintain good governance and put controls in place to address potential risks.
- Clients and other relevant stakeholders are informed via ongoing communications.
Expressing Concerns
Company stakeholders and the general public are welcome to express concerns or grievances based on the grievance policy and form published on this site.
