Flexible design and robust content management tools help this national music education company and its 70+ franchise locations drive enrollment and engage customers.

Inspiring kids to rock on stage and in life, School of Rock is the nation’s premier rock music education company with classes, camps, and individual instruction focused on teaching kids how to sing, play guitar, drums, keyboards, and bass. The company turned to Mightybytes for an overhaul of their existing corporate website, a franchising site, and integration of 70+ franchise location microsites under one domain.

OUR APPROACH

Discovery played a significant role on the front end of this project, as initial conversation to site launch took just over a year. We consulted with the School of Rock team on best practices in the following areas:

  • Online business strategy
  • Email marketing
  • Social media
  • Content strategy and management
  • Analytics and measurement

Extensive wireframing, sitemaps, and user task flows helped define critical functions and streamline the process of organizing huge amounts of content from dozens of authors. Defining content types and navigational hierarchy also clarified important questions that arose during the content development and design processes.

IMPLEMENTATION

School of Rock provided us with a company-approved brand book, which helped in defining standards for color, typography and other design elements. The site sits on a Drupal foundation with about 100 open-source contributed and several custom modules. At launch, the site includes the following features:

  • Event and gallery management tools for corporate and franchisee sites
  • Support for video libraries and other rich media elements
  • School Location Finder
  • Custom SalesForce integration via Force.com
  • Ability to build microsites on the fly without programming
  • One database spanning across all sites
  • Visually rich GUI on the back-end to help site admins accomplish previously complex tasks

One of the new site’s most robust features is its ability to quickly add a new franchise location simply by adjusting a few settings. If Duluth, Minnesota signs on as a franchisee, for instance, a Duluth-specific microsite can be launched with minimal effort. Existing corporate-vetted content and guidelines for adding new content are included, simplifying the process of getting a new location up and running quickly.

We will continue to work with the School of Rock team to add features over time, including more web-based franchising tools and support for mobile devices.

THE RETURN

The School of Rock site saw a 73% increase in new visitors within the first two weeks of launch. Using a single Drupal-based system, the new tools streamlined School of Rock’s workflow, saving countless hours and money previously spent laboriously managing hundreds of pages across numerous sites with a variety of disparate systems.
