Educating 100 million people worldwide, Pearson Education is a global leader in educational publishing, providing scientifically research-based print and digital programs to help students learn at their own pace, in their own way. This interactive training tool we created for them extends that mission to teachers as well, allowing educators to get information on professional development courses offered by the publisher on their training site.

OUR APPROACH

With a project requirement that the catalog be created in Adobe Flash and also updatable we opted for an XML-based solution after initial discussions showed that a full content management system was unnecessary. Content updates would be simple and infrequent, and our tech-savvy client felt comfortable editing XML documents, so this approach made sense for keeping project budget and timeline on track.

The catalog is organized by book and subject matter with courses that are program-specific to Pearson curriculum. General professional development courses are included as well.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Pearson team provided navigation structure and interface designs as layered graphics files, which we used as the foundation upon which to build our Flash files. We created the initial XML schema based on provided project specifications and worked with the client to update the XML files with all the relevant course information. After some cross-platform, cross-browser testing the catalog was ready for implementation on the Pearson website.

Using this interactive catalog, teachers can improve their skills and become more marketable while the team at Pearson Education can easily update curriculum titles whenever a new one is offered.
