Don a chin-strap beard and stovepipe top hat in honor of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday with Everybody’s Lincoln, a user-generated content activity for the Chicago History Museum.

The Chicago History Museum, the city’s oldest cultural institution founded in 1856, turned to Mightybytes for help with the online component of a museum exhibit showcasing Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday.

OUR APPROACH

The CHM team had most of the technical specs needed to create this user-generated content activity before they came to us, which was helpful to hit the ground running for a brisk production schedule. We consulted with them on design options such as color, font, layout, etc. and also worked through potential issues with getting the Flash-based activity to adhere to set template standards within the museum site’s content management system. Our schedule was determined by exhibit launch date, so we built production benchmarks into the existing timeline for client review, testing, and so on.

IMPLEMENTATION

Key user interface screens went through several rounds of revisions as we worked through how to create the most intuitive experience within parameters given to us while still maintaining brand identity of the larger museum exhibit. Other specific production tasks included integrating Flash and the Flickr API, working through the process of exporting branded imagery from Flash, maintaining file size limitations, making interface controls simple and intuitive, and of course testing across multiple browsers and platforms.

Everybody’s Lincoln includes the following features:

  • Photo upload with file size limitations
  • Scrolling set of Lincoln accessories
  • Scale, rotate, flip, etc.
  • Six color options
  • Upload to Flickr
  • Export an image file

THE RETURN

Early participants using this activity could also enter the Everybody's Lincoln photo contest, winners of which had their 'Lincolnized' photos featured in ads on busses and in train stations all around the Chicago area, generating significant buzz about the exhibit.
