The Arts & Business Council of Chicago helps arts organizations audit business tactics with a custom web survey tool.
The Arts & Business Council (A&BC) of Chicago annually supports hundreds of Chicago-area nonprofit arts and culture organizations by providing their management with quality educational, assessment, and advisory services, and by partnering them with expert volunteers from the for-profit business sector. From workshops and forums to consulting projects and one-on-one coaching, A&BC offers multiple ways for organizations to gain mastery in the business of the arts. They came to Mightybytes for help giving their online survey tool a complete overhaul.
OUR APPROACH
A&BC uses an online survey tool to perform custom business audits for entire arts organizations. This tool provides anonymous information and cohesion reports which are then examined by A&BC consultants who make recommendations on how the organization can better streamline its processes. The project’s discovery phase included assessing key features of the existing tools and outlining specs for critical new functions. Based on the outcome of that assessment, we decided to build this modular system on a standard open source framework rather than use a CMS.
IMPLEMENTATION
CodeIgniter allowed us to create a more modular version of existing functionality and add key new features as well, such as:
- Special log-in with a stripped down interface for consultants
- Save survey and continue later
- Customizable email messaging templates
- Admin survey tracking functions
- Export to Excel spreadsheets

The custom survey tool simplifies the process of auditing arts organizations and providing critical business reporting to help them better streamline processes, improve their workflows, and ultimately improve the bottom line.
