Panasonic just announced the release of a new solid-state tapeless HD camera that capitalizes on the success of its popular DV-based AG-DVX100. We just replaced our DVX100 with the Sony PMW-EX1, also a solid-state tapeless HD camera. At nearly $3,000.00 less than the Sony camera (with a suggested list price of $3,995.00), I will be very curious to see how they stack up against each other. The magical tubes of the interwebz will no doubt be flooded with comparisons between the two models in the coming weeks. A full review of the camera can be found on the Digital Content Producer blog as well as at dv.com.

Loyalty beyond reason. Lucas Conley’s book Obsessive Branding Disorder opens with a story about Japanese women forgoing motherhood in order to afford Luis Vitton products. It’s an extreme case of brand loyalty but one that gets his point across. He follows that story up with one firm’s suggestion to rebrand the War on Terror as the “Fight for a Better World”. After that he brings up the city of New Orleans’ ill-fated attempt to rebrand its image in the wake of violent crime surges after Katrina. And the list goes on. With case study after case study, Conley successfully illustrates that the concept of branding—anything from a handbag to the war…Read more »

Over 3,600 designers, creative-thinkers and industry-leaders gathered in May for the 2008 HOW Design Conference held at the Hynes Convention Center. I had the fortunate opportunity to attend this three-day extravagance, and couldn’t be more thankful for the inspiration and insight I brought home. The team at Mightybytes is focused on maintaining the pre-set standards of clients when approaching a project, while at the same time infusing new creative elements to keep clients a fresh and part of the community of users they target. Conferences like HOW help designers stay attentive to creativity while understanding ways to balance the needs of other team members such as developers and printers.

In early June I went down to the HDExpo at Navy Pier to check out what’s new in the world of high definition video technology. What I found were the usual sneak peak of freshly picked products: HD games, multiple HD camera simulations, all-HD editing set-ups, and a lot of smiling people telling whoever would listen why their brand is the best. I must say, I found many of the gizmos fascinating, but the drone of the crowd and faux sparkle of eager salespeople pitching their merchandise got to me after awhile (five minutes). Quickly, I ascended the stairs and decided to sit in on a roundtable session: Tech and the…Read more »
