Best of Adobe MAX #4: Sound Synthesis in Flash

by Tim Frick

Tone generation is new to ActionScript 3.0 and developers have embraced this feature wholeheartedly to build audio applications that are both impressive and innovative. Hobnox has used this technology in their AudioTool product to build virtual synthesizers, drum machines and effects pedals, effectively creating a network-enabled version of Propellerhead Software’s flagship product Reason within the Flash Player.

Just thinking about the worldwide collaboration possibilities that a network-enabled music creation tool offers is impressive enough. Play with these devices for a few minutes and you will be impressed even more, especially with the sleek design Hobnox has employed to bring these virtual instruments to life. As of this writing, a sequencer has not been added to AudioTool yet, but you can record the music you create in real-time and playing with the AudioTool is just flat-out addictive. A great start to a very promising Flash Player application.
