Digital Publishing Workshop
Tim is giving a three hour workshop at the Association of Educational Publishers’ Digital Publishing Summit in Washington, DC June 10, 2009. The workshop will cover a concept-to-completion approach to digital publishing using free blog software and media conversion tools as well as distribution via social media outlets. Fast, Cheap and Under Control: Creating and Managing a Digital Media Publishing System in Three Hours or Less
General Overview:
Need to publish your content online quickly and for free? This three-hour AEP workshop will get you on the right track to digital publishing success with a series of lectures, discussion and hands-on exercises built around a digital publishing workflow that incorporates free or open-source tools for content deployment and distribution. The course will include a general overview of media formats, a discussion of blogs and how to configure them to instantaneously publish a variety of media types, and a breakdown of social media tools you can use to distribute your content to millions of users with just a few clicks. With ample time for hands-on exercises and questions, this workshop will arm you with the skills necessary to master today’s most popular digital publishing trends.
Hour One: The Media
Presentation (20-30 minutes):
A general overview of popular media formats and tools to convert your media to meet web publishing standards. This lecture will demystify the alphabet soup of online media formats and provide you with resources to easily convert your files to the appropriate format of choice.
Presentation topics include:
• Video formats and conversion tools
• Audio formats and conversion tools
• Audio/Video metadata
• Flash and other rich media
• Getting text ready for deployment to a blog
• The importance of keyword-rich content for search engines
Hands-On: Use provided media and utilities to convert files with target data rates and file sizes
Q&A: 10-15 minutes
Hour Two: The Deployment
Presentation (20-30 minutes):
Our second hour will cover the pros and cons of various blog platforms and take users step-by-step through one of two processes for installing and configuring a blog to use as a media publishing platform. A discussion of various blog elements such as comments and trackbacks will be included, as well as a cursory overview of a blog admin interface.
Presentation topics include:
• The importance of a solid blog strategy
• Configuring appropriate navigational architecture
• Installing and configuring blog software
• The blog admin interface
• Using plug-ins to extend functionality
• Adding posts with copy, hyperlinks, and media elements
• Options for monetizing your content
Hands-On: Create a custom blog entry with body text, hyperlinks, and an embedded audio or video media element.
Q&A: 10-15 minutes
Hour Three: The Distribution
Presentation (20-30 minutes):
Once your content is published, there are a variety of tools with which you can build traffic and create an audience or community. This discussion will cover a variety of video, social media and RSS tools you can use to distribute your published content to wider audiences.
Presentation topics include:
• Using RSS feeds to aggregate content across multiple sites
• Importing blog content to Facebook or LinkedIn via apps
• Other important social media technologies and sites
• Putting Share This on your blog for easy social media sharing
• Using TubeMogul and Blip.tv to distribute video content to many sites with just a few clicks
Hands-On: import blog content to social media accounts; walk through the TubeMogul interface and other video-sharing tools.
